On Artists

June 10, 2013

Here’s what’s on my mind today. It’s one of a series of questions I’ve asked in the last few months, as I have come to formalize (and prioritize) my writing life as central, while grappling with doubts about the worth of doing so. (Not the motivation or the desire—both are there. Just the worth.)

So. My question: Is there a difference in importance between the material we create and the material we use/mine/mold to create? In other words, accepting that both are necessary, what more significantly makes an artist: our stuff or the art we create using that stuff?

[Now comes the doubt. Is it worth asking such a question? Is it worth trying to answer? The dishwasher is done. Let’s go empty the dishwasher.]
