Veterans Day

November 11, 2010

The Facebook feed is loaded with messages of gratitude to veterans today. Many updates include personal thanks to fathers, of course. My dad served on a submarine during the Vietnam War. When I asked my mom about it, she said that he was barred from talking too much about his service.

What I know: Daddy loved the intricate systems of human-made things, whether a transistor radio or a nuclear submarine; while on the sub, he spent his free time fashioning models of tall ships; Daddy left the Navy when my eldest sister was born so that he and my mother could stay in one place while raising their family; a plaque at his grave acknowledges his service in Vietnam; his old sub was decommissioned; my sister D and I fashioned dollhouse furniture in Daddy’s old basement workshop; I will inherit the model ships he built while on the sub; no matter how small my living space I will want to make room for those ships.
