“Babies are not brain damaged”

An infant can’t tell you she remembers how to use a toy. But that doesn’t mean the memory isn’t there. New research shows babies remember in far more sophisticated ways than previously believed. For the newest humans, memory is wrapped up in basic emotional outlook. Safety. Comfort. Love. Infants need to know, “am I safe, is the world a good place, do I have my people around me?”  If you’re currently gazing at a newborn, say something safe-sounding and comforting and loving.
